Inclusive Play: A Look Inside We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym
Recently I was in Saline, Michigan with my husband visiting our daughter and family. I love to stop at Brewed Awakenings when I am there. It has such an engaging community outreach vibe. I noticed a brochure that read, “We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym.” What a wonderful idea, I thought, and I took the brochure home to explore later and find out what this was all about.
I Googled the name and talked to the owner of this incredible gym in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her name is Robin Hall, and she graciously spoke to me about the franchise. I found out there are 168 locations in 34 states and eight countries. It began in 2010 in California by Dina Kimmel, a passionate advocate for children and also a mother of a son with autism. Her quote is, “Finally a place where you never have to say I’m sorry.” Robin told me that she talked at length to the owners of the Mayfield, Ohio ( near Cleveland) location about opening this special gym in Ann Arbor, and seeing the location in the Cleveland area sold her on the idea.
What makes this gym unique are the twelve pieces of equipment designed to help people with sensory, gross motor, and self-regulation needs. These include:
1. The Zip Slider- to build strength and endurance.
2. Zip Slider Platform with slide- to provide a stepping stool.
3. Crash Pit- provides deep pressure stimulation.
4. Trampoline- provides help with balance.
5. Tunnel- helps with self-regulation.
6. Carpet Swing- helps with body control.
7. Hammock Swing- helps with self-regulation.
8. Monkey bars- help with motor planning.
9. Bolster Swing- helps with motor sequencing.
10. Swivel Rotators-helps with experimental play.
11. Climbing Mountain- promotes body awareness.
12. Rope bridge- helps with lower body strength.
Sometimes, a therapist will want to observe how a child uses play equipment. This specialized equipment allows kids access to amazing equipment that might not be available in other settings. It is also a great way for kids to develop the gross motor skills they need.
There are five ways people can use the We Rock the Spectrum Gym. It can be used for open play, field trips for classes, birthday parties, classes, and private play dates. Two types of care are also available at this gym. The first is respite care and the second is break time care, designed to give a break for families with children with special needs.
This gym is also at select locations in Ohio, including Columbus, Stow, and Mayfield. It is an excellent gym that provides a fantastic experience with activities every child will love. Come and check out a one-of-a-kind indoor sensory-friendly playground designed with all children in mind.
